Sidetracked by Reverend Al...

Tonight I decided that I was going to start looking into this critical listening thing I've been on about. I was going to take a listen to some things over at iTunes and whatnot and follow up with reading what other people have been saying about those songs that catch my ear. I had just about fired up the computer when there was a song in the background (TV noise...I forgot to turn it off). The Grammy Awards was on and there was the Rev. Al Green BURNING up the stage. He made me completely forget what it was I had set out to do. Of course, I'd heard Al Green before. Who hasn't! But DAMN!! The man can sing and so my well thought out plans to jump into anonymous stacks of music turned into me, getting brain deep, in Al Green.

Not all of what I heard was great song writing. But what I heard was a man singing from a deep place inside that is only gotten to by a life time of living hard, resurrecting himself, persevering, and honing a passion for the music over a lifetime. His is not the best voice I've ever heard. That's not the point. It's where that raspy soulful voice can take you. It's the love of the performance and the feeling that he could not do anything else if his life depended on it.

So, yeah, Sunday night, Al Green, all is well.
