An early birthday present from a wonderful man...

This week was rough for me.  For reasons I won't go into here my immune system is low and I'm warding off anemia with iron supplements. The result of all this is I tend to get any and all coughs, colds or sniffles that I come into contact with. This week I was doing my best to fend off a heinous head cold. My ear was hurting and I was coughing a lot. My brain was in a stuffy fog and try as I might I finally succumbed and ended up staying home from work on Thursday.

Around midday I was trying yet again to get some sleep when I heard Alex come home from work. This is very unusual. I laid there for a while wondering what the heck he was doing. He was putzing around in the living room. I finally got up and this is what I saw.

Yep! That is a brand new iMac! He looks at me and says, "Happy Early Birthday!" Now, my birthday isn't until December so this was really early. And the iMac? Holy moly! I was speechless! This is the most beautiful computer I've ever used let alone owned! It's sleek, sexy and quiet. Makes absolutely no noise at all. I love this thing so much.

But more than that I love the wonderful man that is so thoughtful and full of surprises! I never in a million years would have guessed this was something he'd do. He's the best part of my life and I want the whole world to know it. I am lucky to have him. I'm keeping him!

Getting roses at work...

Today is my birthday.

I was greeted with at least 50 well wishes on Facebook this morning. My FB friends must get up really early in the morning because most of them were there before 7am!

I got a kiss and a hug from my husband before I left the house.

I got a snuggle from Arnie and a "purrrr" from Belle.

Then, I got a dozen beautiful long stem roses delivered to my work place from my hubby.

And there was a note that said some incredibly heartfelt things that made me tear up a bit.

A coworker bought me lunch - both yesterday and today.

All of my coworkers sang Happy Birthday - more than once.

Some of my clients sang Happy Birthday - more than once.

I feel so loved and so needed and so happy.

This has been a really great day. I have great friends, a great job, sweet kitties, and, even more, a husband that shows me he loves me every day in so many ways. I am blessed.

Happy Birthday to me!!

Chicken livers and job prospects!

Saturday was Alexander's birthday. To honor him, I got my hair cut and colored. HAHAHA! No seriously, I did but not in honor of his birthday. That was in honor of my really needing a hair cut and a color.

For his birthday, after much debate, we opted to have German food at The House of Gerhard. For those not in this area, The House of Gerhard is one of the best restaurants in this area. It was founded in the 50's by a German chef named...wait for it...Gerhard...and the place has not changed a lick since then. Well, it may have a few more chotzke's and doo-dads in it but, overall, the menu and decor have pretty much stayed the same. And thank heaven's it has!! I love the chotzke's and doo-dads. And great googly moogly, the menu! Pure German goodness. Anytime you can get chicken livers in onion and mushroom gravy with potato pancakes and the sweetest carrots ever is a good time. Wash it down with one of their imported German beers and you got an Octoberfest waiting to happen. They also give you the "house appetizers" which is unusual in itself. Normally, you have to order and pay extra for an appetizer but Gerhard's gives it up freely. Liver pate, little home made garlic toasts and a sweet slaw that's so yummy! Love this place! Highly recommend it!

After dinner, we went home and ate a load of chocolate chip frosted cookie thing.

But the best part of Alexander's birthday was that when the mail came he received...FINALLY...his employment approval card from Immigration!! This has been a long time coming and, though it only the second to the last step in this immigration journey, it was welcomed with much whooping and dancing around the living room! That was both of us, by the way...dancing and whooping. Yes, a good time was had by all.

So, next step...full on permanent residency. This is NOT the same as becoming a citizen. This is getting legalized as a resident alien which gives him the big green light to live here, work here and be here without giving up his Swedish citizenship.

And so...again...HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY or as they say in Germany "Glucklich glucklich freude freude"!! Or in Swedish....lycklig lycklig glädje glädje! :D

Happy Birthday Mom!

My mom's birthday was yesterday but tonight we'll get together for cake and some cards to celebrate her 93rd birthday! 93 years! My mom has been the strongest woman role model I've had in my life and I can honestly say that I have learned all of life's best lessons.

My mom was a teacher. She taught 2nd grade at a parochial school for almost 30 years and other than a maternity break here and there she never took a day off or called in sick.

My mom was a volunteer. Up until a year ago my mom volunteered her time at our local soup kitchen, making sandwiches and offering smiles to the local homeless people here.

My mom is very spiritual and WHOLLY Catholic. To this day, she goes to church every day. Until last year she also kept a vigil on Saturday's at a chapel in a local nursing home. She volunteered her time to help the church count the weekly donations and make deposits. She was on the church council and was a reader at the Masses on Sunday. My mom's religion is very important to her.

My mom wore the pants in our family and still does. My dad was a pacifist who hated when there was a ruckus or argument. His solution was to try not to make waves. My mom on the other hand could stop any foolishness with just "the look" which let us know we were perilously close to some kind of doom. We never let it get beyond "the look" so I have no idea what doom that may have been! To this day, all of us grown, know that there are things we do that will bring that "look" and, even as adults, we try to avoid it at all costs.

I haven't always done what I know my mom would have me do. For example, I am not religious at all. I don't happen to believe in a god though I've had 12 years of Catholic school. I know that disappoints her and, because of what she believes, makes her afraid for my afterlife. I know that some choices I've made in life haven't always been what she would have chosen for me. For example, she really wanted me to be a teacher but I chose another course of study at college and an entirely different career path.

But I also know that what my mom wants for me, and for all my siblings, is that we are happy and healthy and loved. And I know that deep down she is proud of me.

My best image of my mother is this -
Back when she was a mere 75 years old, I went over to her house to see her. I walked in and heard some god-awful pounding and the "blam blam" of something being knocked with a large object. I went upstairs and found her in her room knocking out a wall with a sledge hammer. When my parents bought her house, there was only a master bedroom and one small bedroom. They turned the master into two smaller bedroom to accommodate us kids. At 75, with her kids moved out and her husband gone, my mom decided she wanted her master bedroom back and rather than hire someone to do it for her she borrowed a sledge hammer and went at it herself. Then, she finished off the dry wall and painted it too. Yup, that's my mom. A pillar of strength and boat load of tenacity.

At 93, she still lives in her own home on her own. Still drive a car too albeit only to a nearby grocery store and to church once a day. Her mind is sharp as a tack and she lives to play cards with her children twice each week.

She's a helluva a strong woman and I hope that I have some of that when I grow up!

More days...

Everything past Easter Sunday just seems to be so...well..boring! It's back to work and back to the usual and there's not much to look forward to that would be out of the ordinary.

But tomorrow (the 17th) is Alexander's birthday. I wish I was there in Sweden so we could celebrate it together. I know, one of these days, we will be but still... waiting is too hard. I want it now!!
